Counting Sheep

Scripture for Today: Psalm 40:5  “Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders which You have done, and Your thoughts toward us; there is none to compare with You.  If I would declare and speak of them, they would be too numerous to count.”

Celebrated recently was the thirty-eighth annual Fête des Bergers in Istres, France.  This festival in Provence celebrates shepherds and sheep with traditional music, costumes and dance.  But the most important event is the parade of sheep through the middle of the town!  I am not sure that any spectators were trying to count them.  If they had tried, they just might have fallen asleep!

The concept of counting sheep to fall asleep has been around a very long time.  Supposedly, the repetitive monotony of counting identical white sheep jumping over a fence lulls one asleep.  It has never worked for me!  I am more likely to think about the fence needing repainting or the  weeds that need pulling!

In our verse for today David praises God for all the wonders He has done and all the thoughts God has toward him.  He declares that they are too numerous to count!  No one can compare to our God!  That is why David can put his full trust in Him (verse 4).

It is not uncommon for me to be unable to sleep.  Stress and frustration at the fact that I am losing sleep just aggravates the situation.  Counting sheep does not help.  What does help me is recalling all God has done for me.  As I think about His goodness, I feel the tension slowly ebb away.  Remembering all His acts of kindness toward me puts me back in that place of trust.

Thank you, Lord, that I can fall asleep thinking of all your wonderful works!

(Look familiar?  This is a summer re-post due to ministry schedule.)
