The name of this store is intriguing but what I really like is that it mostly carries my two favorite colors in fashion; white and black. Years ago, I had my colors done and was told that I was a “contrast winter.” That suited me just fine as I was drawn to the bold colors anyway. But this store does carry another color; gray. It is kind of white and kind of black, somewhere in between.
In Scripture it is often very clear what behaviors and even what thoughts are wrong. The acts of the flesh are clearly contrasted with the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. But there are areas that seem to be gray. Today’s verse describes one such area where believers had different sensitivities. Eating meat offered to idols was neither black nor white. Some believers felt it was wrong for them and some did not. For those that ignored their doubts, that which was neutral had the potential of becoming sin. To ignore one’s sensibilities could reveal a rebellious spirit.
There are areas in my life that are definitely in the gray zone. The Lord is so gracious to give the believer lots of freedom of choice. But if I have doubts about something, I need to listen to those doubts. If I continually ignore them then I could be crossing over into a rebellious mindset. Whatever it is I am considering is never as important as a clear conscience before the Lord.
Lord, thank you for the freedom of choice You give me. May all my choices please You.
