Tennis Love

tennis cats756362-bigthumbnailScripture for Today: John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you; Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”

Tennis fans come from some unexpected places it seems!  Seeing that ball batted back and forth is great entertainment for the sports-minded kitty.  They do not even have to learn the scoring lingo.  Using the term, “love,” for zero seems bizarre.  However, most historians think that this term actually came from the French.  An old expression represented a zero as an egg.  As an egg in French is “oeuf” it has slowly been distorted to “love.”  Another theory says that opponents at the start of a match all love one another having the same score of zero!

Loving my partner and the opposing team all throughout a tennis match can sometimes be difficult.  But toady’s verse goes well beyond that scenario.  We are commanded to love one another as the Lord loves us.  That is a tall order as His love is such a sacrificial one.  He loved to the point of pouring out His life.  A love like that has to be a supernatural one.

There are hundreds of books on sharing one’s faith but the most effective demonstration of a changed life is the love believers have for one another.  It is unlike anything found in the world as it comes from the power His Spirit provides.  As I think about this new year, I want this command to find new expression in me.  I do not want to just love in word, but also in deed! (I John 3:18)  But I cannot do it on my own.  It has to be His love.

Lord, make me more loving.  Make me like You.
