Used or Pre-Owned?

car10391753_1146690423676_3802985_nScripture for Today: John 15:19 “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”

It seems obvious that this 1939 Chevy 2 door sedan street rod is a used car.  They just don’t make cars like this anymore, especially with that swamp cooler hanging off the window! But what confuses me are the terms, “used” and “pre-owned.”  Perhaps the term pre-owned is just a fancy way of glorifying the term, used.  But when adding the word, “certified,” there is a rigorous inspection to pass.  I thought I had it straight until I saw another description, “previously enjoyed!”  Oh well.

Today’s verse records the words of Jesus to His disciples.  They were “pre-owned” in that they formerly belonged to a world of values and thinking opposed to Jesus.  They could expect that the world would hate them as they were no longer a part of it.  Just as the world hated Jesus, the world would also hate His disciples.  The Lord was preparing them for the opposition, abuse and martyrdom they would face.

I was “pre-owned” as well.  I initially belonged to the world as its system, values and thinking had a firm hold on my life.  But with Jesus calling me out of it, I now have the privilege of belonging to Him!  The unreasonable hate shown to believers by the world is really directed at Christ in me.  Even so, I am privileged beyond belief with my new Owner!  The surpassing worth of knowing Him gives me a value that far exceeds what the world could give!

“Now I belong to Jesus, Jesus belongs to me.  Not for the years of time alone, but for eternity!”
