Silver Spoon

Scripture for Today: Ephesians 1:18 “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people.”

My Mother had a spoon collection much like this one.  They were not all made of silver but they were valuable as they held special meaning, representing my parents’ world travels.  Although my family loved to travel, we children were not born with silver spoons in our mouths!  The work ethic was strong in our home and we were expected to save and spend responsibly.  My folks taught me to fear the Lord and I cannot think of a better inheritance this side of Heaven!

Today’s verse describes another inheritance that for now can only be seen with our spiritual eyes.  We are told that we can know of it even though it is future.  The Lord has reserved for His own a rich inheritance that is delightful, (Ps. 16:6) and that endures forever (Ps. 37:18).  My inheritance will never perish, spoil or fade (I Peter 1:4)  It is better than silver or gold.  I have no right to it based on my own merit.  It is He who qualifies me to share in this inheritance (Col. 1:12).

Knowing this and believing this changes how I live.  The wealth of this world is only a poor substitute and chasing after it is like chasing after the wind.  The Lord alone is my portion and cup, making me secure (Ps. 16:5).  I have what money cannot buy.  I have Him.  He is my treasure and He makes my life so rich.  Without Him I am poor and needy no matter what the bank balance says.

Thank you Lord, for not only my future inheritance but for the incomparable riches of knowing You.
