Scripture for Today: Isaiah 45:23 “By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked; Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue will swear.”
This kneeling cow has an audience to his ungainly change of position. The ox, cow and bull all have the same maneuver in getting up or lying down. Unlike other farm animals they kneel on their front legs. Perhaps it was this behavior that gave rise to the folklore referenced by Thomas Hardy in his novel, “Tess of the d’Urbervilles.” This charming belief said that when the church bells ring at midnight every Christmas Eve, the cattle would kneel in homage to the baby Jesus.
In today’s verse there is intentional kneeling on the part of every human being to the One and only God. (verse 22) Every tongue will confess or verbally agree with God as well concerning who He is. God’s word is sure and true but even more weight is given this pronouncement when God Himself swears it! One day, those who have mocked and scorned Him will kneel. One day, those who have rebelled against Him will kneel. Those who have dared to worship another will kneel before the true God.
There is comfort in knowing that the Lord is not ever mocked and will be recognized and worshipped for who He is. But what blessing He gives now when I kneel before Him in humility! Kneeling before Him is not just bending my knee but bending my will to conform to His. It is a life-long struggle to make Him first as my Lord and King. But it is a struggle well worth it as He fills my life with more of Himself!
Lord, help me get myself out of the way and kneel.
