Strawberries Grow on Trees?

Scripture for Today: Psalm 119:103 “How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.”

Who would have thought it, that strawberries could grow on trees! Of course, this berry growing on the Arbutus Marina (or Strawberry Tree) is not quite the same. Its taste is bland and not so sweet except when cooked and mixed with sweeteners or other fruit. But it is nutritional being a source of vitamin C, about three times the amount in an orange. It is also good for fiber and rich in antioxidants and tannins. It is just not very sweet.

Today’s verse likens God’s words to sweetness. His words are like honey for the soul. Whether we hear them from a Bible teacher, a song or a devotional, it is always sweet. But there is a different more intense flavor when we discover a nugget of truth for ourselves in His Word. The taste is better and sweeter when He speaks to us directly from His Word without any other intermediary. It is just picked. It is fresh and there is a special sweetness.

I am encouraged by others’ teaching. God uses the study and clear exhortation of Bible scholars in my life. There is a myriad of wonderful study guides. They are all sweet and have their place. But there is a more satisfying and intense flavor to His Word when I take the time to open it on my own. It is especially sweet when the Lord meets me and speaks to me directly. His Spirit is so personal, guiding me into a truth for that moment and for my exact need.

Lord, I need Your sweet words.  Make them fresh for me today.

Fire Hydrant Runs Dry

Scripture for Today: John 7:38 “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'” (ESV)

In a perfect world, a fire hydrant would never run dry. It is inconceivable that a fire hydrant would not deliver the water so desperately needed. However, during the recent wildfires in California that is exactly what happened in some areas. The water storage tanks supplying those hydrants went dry. Planes were grounded due to the strong winds. And without the water and chemical airdrops the municipal water systems could not keep up with the high demand. How awful it must have been to realize the hydrants were of no help!

Today’s verse describes another source of water. Jesus, who calls Himself the Giver of living water, promised this to the woman at the well. (John 4:10) For those who have placed their faith in Christ, it is also promised as we are the “whosoever” that believe. This flow of living water is identified in the next verse as His Spirit residing in the believer. There is a constant flow of His power producing fruit. There is never any lack and we never run dry. Everyday we can be filled, And everyday we can overflow to others.

The “Living Water” within not only quenches my thirst for meaning and significance. He also quenches the fires of Satan’s temptations to doubt His goodness when things go terrible wrong. His Spirit reminds me of His faithfulness and care so that those pesky fires that keep popping up are extinguished. The Living Water is found again in our eternal home where there will no longer be thirst, scorching heat or tears. (Rev. 7:16-17) But I don’t have to wait. My “living water” is His presence even today and I never have to run dry.

Fill me up today, Lord.

Holding Me Up

Scripture for Today: Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

If you were to board a “vaporetto” or public water bus in Venice, you would be sure to see this startling sculpture. It has a prominent place on the Grand Canal and the gleaming white hands seem to rise up from the water to hold up this hotel. It was sculpted by Lorenzo Quinn, the son of Hollywood’s Anthony Quinn, in 2017. Not surprisingly he named it, “Support.” This artist used his talent to showcase the delicate balance between Venice and the sea.

Today’s verse reassures us that there are hands that hold us up. God speaks this special message to the Israelites in a passage that declares His power over all of their adversaries. There is no reason to fear or be dismayed at the opposition. That is because He promises His strength and help. In the same way, the believer today can be confident. If God is for us who can be against us? (Rom. 8:31) and because of HIs love upholding us we are MORE than conquerors. (Rom. 8:37)

There are so many verses that tell us not to fear. A friend of mine is going through each one of these verses as she helps her husband through cancer treatment. Opposition comes in many forms. But whatever I may face that threatens to bring me down, there are hands holding me up. Anxiety, worry, what if’s or even a mild disquiet is not what the Lord wants me to feel. He offers His strength, His help, His support and His love. In looking forward to an unknown future, there is no room for fear!

Thank you Lord, that You will always hold me up.

A Wave of Change

Scripture For Today: Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

As we begin this new year I cannot help but think of the song written by Bob Dylan, “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” Certainly, the world has swiftly changed these past few years, proving true what Plato said, “All is flux, nothing stays still.” What is considered “normal” has changed. Social expectations have changed. We have changed. And as we look to the new year it can be with some trepidation about what may change next! How will the next changes impact our lives? What if I don’t want to change?

Today’s verse is an enormous comfort. Yes, change can be adventurous and an opportunity for growth. But it almost always comes with some discomfort. However, Jesus Christ does not change. Being perfect, there is no need for any improvements. The power He had is still His. The control over nature He demonstrated is still viable. He continues to be what He always has been; faithful and true, compassionate, good and loving. And because He does not change, His Word remains. He is the solid Rock, a foundation that can weather any wave of change.

In a world that seems to shift almost daily its norms, priorities and focus, I can stand firm. He has never failed me despite major changes in my life; career changes, losing family members, gaining family members, 17 moves and more! My world changes but He does not and continues to be everything I need to face an unknown future. I can look forward to this new year as I have all the rest, with confidence that the Lord is already there, warm, loving and familiar!

Thank you Lord, that You never will change and I can always count on You.

A New Beginning

Scripture for Today: Lamentations 3:22-23 “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail.  They are NEW every morning: great is Your faithfulness.”

Life is full of new beginnings and this week marks another one. We celebrate the new year with hopes that there will be some positive changes in our lives and in our world. For some it is with a sigh of relief that the last year is left behind. Even though there may be some trepidation facing the unknown, there is also potential for something new and we look forward with expectation! But as the year progresses, that sense of newness can somehow wear off.

Today’s verses gives us reason to face not only the start of each new year with hope but also the start of each new day. The Lord reassures His own of His love and compassions. And just like the sunrise, His compassions are new every morning. They are not warmed up leftovers from the day before! Every day He is faithful to reveal something new about Himself. Every morning He shows His compassion by allowing our eyes to fly open and begin a new day.

There is only one reason I can face this new year with confidence and optimism: His love and compassion. They will not fail me regardless of what may come. His love is so great that it reaches higher than the heavens. And His faithfulness is so great that it reaches to the skies. (Psalm 108:4) The sun will rise every morning of this new year and so will His love and compassion for me. He has promised and He is faithful.

Lord, help me to trust Your faithful love and compassion.
