Woodpecker

whitebacked_woodpecker_img_0166cScripture for Today: I Corinthians 10:12 “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall.”

I had never seen a woodpecker until living in France.  There was one who frequently visited our yard and with his red markings he was easy to spot.  There was one fruit tree that he especially liked to peck for insects.  I was always happy to see him, not realizing what he was doing to that tree.  One night we had an huge windstorm and with an impressive crack, that tree came down, snapping at exactly the very place that woodpecker had been working!  I feel differently about woodpeckers now.  I missed that mirabelle plum tree!

Today’s verse is a loving warning.  After describing the failures of the Israelites in the wilderness, Paul cautions that falling is a real possibility.  We can think that we are standing firm while at the same time being slowly weakened by compromise.  Like the small attacks by the beak of  a woodpecker, our resolve can slowly erode leaving us vulnerable.  A strong wind of temptation can come along and knock us flat.  We fall to the ground and we no longer bear fruit.

No one wakes up in the morning and decides to give in to temptation.  Being drawn away from Him is usually a slow sneaky process.  And it can come from something normally beautiful or agreeable.  The next verse is such a comforting promise.  God will not allow me to be tempted beyond what I can bear.  He provides a way out.  I have a choice.  That enticement to sin is never so strong that with His help I cannot resist!

Don’t let me fall, Lord.  Keep me firmly standing and bearing fruit.

Fly Away

Scripture for Today:  Psalm 55:6  “…Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!  I would fly away and be at rest.”

The dove has long been the symbol of peace and love.  I love to see them used in a marriage ceremony.  Because doves mate for life, they are an especially poignant symbol of love.  The dove is a symbol of peace for the state of Wisconsin and it is the state bird for Michigan.  The French consider squab a delicacy.  It is quite popular in French traditional cuisine.  But because of its associations, it does seem a shame!

Our verse for today uses the image of a dove to symbolize the desire for escape and rest.  David had been betrayed, not only by his counselor, Ahithopel, but by his own son, Absalom.  He had to flee to the wilderness and defend himself.  In Psalm 55, David was filled with anguish, fear and trembling.  His only thought was to escape and fly away to a place of shelter and rest.

It is surprising that the image of a dove was used rather than one of a bigger stronger bird such as the eagle.  However, there are some species of doves that can fly up to fifty miles per hour and up to six hundred miles in a day!  The wings of a dove are a strong symbol of quick deliverance.

Where do I go when my heart is overwhelmed?  When I am fearful of the future, where do I find peace and rest?  When the hard times seem too much to bear, where can my heart settle down?  His presence is my shelter.  The protection of His wings is my escape (Psalm 91:4).

Lord, I fly to You today for that much-needed rest my heart so needs.

Early Riser

Scripture for Today: Psalm 127:2 “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for He grants sleep to those He loves.”

It goes without saying that “the early bird gets the worm.”  Yet I feel compelled to say it when I see this photo!  For his worms I wonder if that early bird stays up late too.  Perhaps the bird does not sleep so well wondering where to nab his next worm in the morning.  There are other birds out there to compete with after all.

Our verse for today was written by Solomon who has lots to say about vanity.  It is vain to make life all about acquisition.  He should know as he did not deny himself any possession or pleasure (Eccl. 2:10-11).  Yet when he surveyed all that he had toiled to achieve, it was meaningless.  God chooses to bless His loved ones and does so apart from our own toil, even in sleep.

The Bible is full of verses on being a good conscientious worker and not a sluggard.  But toiling incessantly is not the goal of life.  Living with constant stress is not God’s plan.  This world is so fast-paced seeming never to stop.  One is always in a hurry to do more, be more and produce more.  But when I put God’s Kingdom above everything else, God blesses me with everything needed (Matt. 6:33).  There is no point to burning the candle at both ends.  I can take that eight hours of sleep and not feel guilty.  I belong to Him and I trust His care and provision.  I can rest easy knowing He is faithful to provide.

Thank you Lord, that there will be sweet sleep tonight, knowing You love me.

Robbed!

Scripture for Today: Isaiah 61:8 “For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbing and wrongdoing. In My faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them.”

The nerve of this seagull stealing cake at my grandson’s birthday party!  He was persistent, returning every time we moved away!  The seagull is known for its scavenger habits.  These “garbage men with wings” like to hang around fishing boats, picnic grounds, and parking lots.  Most of the time they do us a service but this one had gone too far!

Today’s verse reveals God’s very character.  He hates robbery and wrongdoing and He loves justice.  Because He feels so strongly on the subject, He uses His power to right those wrongs.  He is faithful and just (I John 1:9) and will deal with all sin.  In His grace He rewards His people with promises of salvation and vengeance for wrong done against us.

I am not unique in living with injustice.  We all live with injustice at some point of our lives.  We all have stories of being robbed, defrauded or victimized.  I am grateful for courts of law that mete out some justice.  But it is never perfectly done and many times, robberies among acquaintances or family members never appear in courts.  Thank God He is just.  Thank God He is faithful to eventually punish and reward according to His perfect justice!  He has promised to avenge and repay (Rom. 12:19) and He will do it perfectly.  Rather than let anger consume me at something unfair, I can have confidence that God will take care of it.

Thank you Lord, that reminders of Your perfect justice calm me down and comfort my heart.

The Partridge

Scripture for Today: Jeremiah 17:11 “Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay are those that gain riches by unjust means. When their lives are half gone, their riches will desert them, and in the end they will prove to be fools.”

The only partridge I am familiar with is the one “in a pear tree” as part of the Christmas song!  In reading about her, I have learned that up in a pear tree is the last place one would find a partridge.  These birds build their nest close to the ground in the fields and hedges of farmland.  The partridge hen produces some of the largest “clutches” of any bird species; up to 22 eggs!

Our verse for today refers to a partridge hatching eggs.  Not only is she hatching her own, but those of others.  This is not a behavior common to this bird but it makes the point.  The partridge produces more eggs than any other bird.  Wanting more is a good description of insatiable greed.  How many eggs are enough?  For some, gaining more and more riches is the goal of life.  As acquiring more does not satisfy, one is driven to continue amassing wealth by any means.

How sad to see a life impoverished by ill-gotten riches!  Reputations are ruined.  Relationships are irreparably broken and life ends up becoming meaningless.  The person described here proves himself a fool.  What a contrast with the one who puts their trust in the Lord! (vs. 7)  He will be blessed and rewarded for his honesty and integrity.  Riches “will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.” (Prov. 23:5)  I want to be content with the number of eggs in my own nest.

Lord, thank you for the blessing and reward that comes from trusting You.
