National No Housework Day

Psalm 51:2-3 “Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.”

Did you know this is National No Housework Day? Apparently the cat on the chair does and perhaps the other cat on the table does too! They are totally unconcerned about the clutter! This certainly seems like a busy household with shoes scattered, clothes hanging out, and laundry to be put away. What is puzzling is that water can under the table. I am sure anyone dropping in at my house would find something puzzling as well! But on this day of no housework, washing and cleaning take a back seat!

Today’s verse is all about a washing and cleansing that really has no day off! This verse is a prayer of David’s after his sin with Bathsheba. He asks God for mercy and compassion to blot out what he had done (vs 1). David does not minimize his sin. Because of his feelings of guilt, his sin is always before him (vs 3). Yet he understands that God’s cleansing can make his heart whiter than snow (vs 7) and that God’s washing will give him a pure heart!

What a patient and forgiving God I have! Because of Christ and His sacrifice for my sin, I can humbly come to Him for His cleansing and know that He will not send me away. There is no limit to His forgiveness. He is faithful and just to forgive my sin (I John 1:9) and that faithfulness He shows me reaches to the skies! (Ps. 36:5) With His promise of complete forgiveness, I can start over again and again with a light pure heart!

Thank you Lord, that You are faithful to forgive me.

Maundy Thursday

Scripture for Today: John 13:34 “A new commandment I give you; Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

This beautiful carving of the Last Supper can be seen at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. This impressive Gothic-style cathedral is a commanding presence on the Rhine River and can boast being the tallest twin-spired church in the world! This carving is part of an arch depicting many biblical scenes. Today is Maundy Thursday which commemorates Christ’s final Passover and Last Supper before Easter. Maundy is from the Latin, “madatum,” meaning command.

Today’s verse is a new commandment Christ gave us on this very day. It was a busy one as this was also the day when Jesus showed His love for His disciples by washing their feet (John 13: 1-17). He loved them to the very end (verse 1). As Jesus shared His last meal with them, He established the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper or communion as a visual reminder of the sacrifice He was about to make. His love was a sacrificial one and He commands that His followers have that same kind of love for each other.

There are many churches that mark this day with observances that mirror Christ’s own; washing feet and taking the Lord’s Supper. It is a solemn moment as I approach that fateful and pivotal day of crucifixion. It helps me to ready my heart for Good Friday. But perhaps an even more meaningful way to mark this day is for me to obey this command of love. Not only today but everyday, He wants me to show the world that I am His disciple through the way I love (verse 35). With my selfish heart, I find it one of the harder commands to follow.

Lord, I need Your help to love like You do!

Almond Blossoms

Scripture for Today: Jeremiah 1:11-12 “The word of the Lord came to me; ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?’ ‘I see the branch of an almond tree,’ I replied. The Lord said to me, ‘You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.'”

The vineyards in the Alsacian countryside of France may still lie dormant. But the almond trees are in full bloom! Their delicate pink blossoms waft to the ground with the slightest breeze, leaving a sweet smelling carpet. Those fragile blossoms are a promise of what is to come. Their appearance signals that the almond harvest will follow.

Today’s verse is part of a conversation the prophet Jeremiah had with the Lord. At first glance the thread of the conversation does not seem obvious. Although it is reassuring to know that God’s word will always be fulfilled, what does God watching have to do with the almond tree? I love how the Lord plays with language in this verse! The Hebrew for “watching” sounds like the Hebrew word for “almond tree.” The Lord is reassuring this prophet and us too that His word is faithful and true. He will fulfill every promise.

When I see justice delayed or evil men prospering, it is easy to doubt God’s word. When I see God’s promises seemingly unfulfilled, I can easily grow impatient. Although my timetable may be different, His word will be fulfilled. No matter how many promises God has made, they are YES in Christ (II Cor. 1:20). And He has promised so much that is still in the future. Thankfully while I wait, He has given me those almond blossoms to reassure me that He has not forgotten. He is watching to make sure every word of every promise is fulfilled.

Separating Eggs

Scripture for Today: II Corinthians 6:17 “Therefore, ‘Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.'”

All it takes is just a little bit of yolk to mess up that recipe asking for egg whites only! But separating that yolk from the white takes some real finesse that I often fail to have. I either am too rushed or distracted. And even when I manage this delicate operation, I frustrate myself by getting a small piece of shell in there. Thankfully, no one sees me trying to fish it out!

Today’s verse is a command from the Lord to be separate as His own people. God chose the Israelites to be a set apart people to reveal to the world His glory and His name. As believers and as part of His Church, we too are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and God’s special possession (I Peter 2:9). Because this is true, we are to be separate from the world’s values and morals. Rather than blending in with the world, we are to stand out because friendship with the world makes us God’s enemy James 4:4).

My life is to be so different that I am easily identified as belonging to Him. The highest authority in my life is His authority and His Word. When I compromise that standard, it can be as messy as trying to separate that egg! As a believer I do not have the deeper things in common with an unbeliever (verse 15). My heart is different because He dwells there (Ephesians 3:17). It is not only that there are activities in which I do not participate. But it is also that what I am doing has the purpose of pleasing Him!

Thank you Lord, for separating me out for Yourself!

The Great Tailed Grackle

Scripture for Today: Psalm 73:9 “Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.”

One either loves or hates the Great Tailed Grackle. Mexican legend has it that this bird stole seven songs from the sea turtle, leaving it silent. Their chatter is less like song and more like the tones of tearing sheet metal or cars crashing! This is an urbanized bird with attitude, stalking the streets as if they belonged to them. They are clever foragers, carefully combing the grilles of parked cars for dead insects. They are also nest robbers and the females will even steal nesting material from each other!

Today’s verse describes the arrogance of the wicked. They are noisy with their claims to special privilege and feel that whatever the earth has is theirs to take. With their wealth and power comes privilege to treat others with contempt. Rules are for others of less importance, leaving them “free of care.” (vs 12) In many cases the wicked do prosper, negating the old adage that, “cheaters never prosper.” The psalmist is discouraged, until he understands their final destiny and judgement. (vs 17)

I can be just as discouraged when I see others seemingly get away with thumbing their nose at God. I too can feel that it is not worth the effort to keep my heart pure (vs 13) when I have no earthly advantages for it. But this is the short view! The Lord does not promise me riches here but He does promise me Paradise that rivals anything earth has to offer! I can say with the psalmist, “as for me, it is good to be near God.” His presence is my joy, His peace my comfort and His love is the strength of my heart! (vs 26)

Thank you Lord, that being faithful to You is worth it!
