Mushrooms

Scripture for Today:  Hebrews 5:14  “But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.”

It is that time of year here when mushroom hunting is in full swing!  My French friends go to the local forests and gather their favorites, knowing the best areas to find them.  When you see the prices in the stores you can understand the motivation to hunt one’s own!

I would not be a good guide to the safe mushrooms.  I know nothing about it.  And even the most experienced can sometimes make a mistake, even a fatal one.  The way it works here is that if one is unsure, the mushrooms are checked by the staff of the local pharmacy.  They are trained to discern which mushrooms are poisonous.

Our verse talks about another kind of discernment that should characterize the mature believer.  Those believers who have finished with “milk” and have progressed to solid food are those who are experienced and skilled in living righteously.  Their spiritual senses are trained to know good from evil. Because they have been in the Word they know how to choose what pleases the Lord.

Those poisonous mushrooms can look so edible.  Satan is an angel of light and a liar.  He knows how to make something lethal look real good.  If we think that on our own we can tell the difference between what is good and what is evil than we are deceiving ourselves.  It is only through knowing God’s Word that we have any discernment at all.

I do not want to be deceived.  I never want to feel I have been fooled by the enemy.  I want rather to have senses sharpened by His Word.  Today, may I recognize even the smallest nuance of evil and avoid it like a bad mushroom!

How Sweet!

Scripture for Today:  Psalms 19:10  “More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; they are sweeter also than honey and drippings from the honeycomb.”

Honey-making is a big deal around here!  There are little roadside stands everywhere selling honey.  There is even a Honey Fair in our town this month!  I am no connaisseur but I do appreciate the differences in taste.  There are so many varieties!  I just received a hostess gift of honey from the wildflowers in the Alps!  Yum!  But one thing they all have in common, sweetness!

The verse for today compares God’s Word to the sweetness of honey.  But just as the bee keeper has to make an effort to harvest the honey, so I need to make an effort to read and study God’s Word!  The bee keeper has protective gear to avoid the bee sting but I am sure he still gets a few.  Even with pain involved the bee keeper stays motivated to reach that honey!  The Bible can be difficult sometimes to understand.  There is effort involved to dig and study.  There are times when God’s Word convicts me and like a bee sting, that is not comfortable!  But the sweetness of relationship with my Creator makes every effort worth it!

How do I feel about the Bible today!  Do I regard reading it as an obligation?  Or do I run to it with anticipation for what God may communicate to me today?  The sweetness of His love for me is there in its pages.  The assurance of His care and control is a reminder that is sweet to taste.  Psalms 34:8 says to taste and see that the Lord, He is good!  I sometimes complain that I have too much of a “sweet tooth” but when it comes to reading God’s Word, that’s a good thing!

Building on the Rock

Scripture for Today:  Matthew 7:24  “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

This house in Three Arch Bay is impressive.  It not only looks over the private beach of that community, but has an incredible unobstructed view!  It looks like it may just last forever, being that it is built on rock.

The verse for today describes the wise man as one who puts the words of Jesus into practice.  He is likened to a man who builds his house on rock.  When I think of rock I think of something strong, solid and durable.  The house will withstand storms because of the foundation.  Isaiah 28:16 says the stone is tested and is a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation.  So, not only do His words serve as the rock on which we build our lives, but Jesus Himself is that Rock!

Some people build their lives on whatever the current thinking is.  And there is so much pressure to follow suit.  But when storms come, their houses fall and their lives are in shambles.  They have based their lives on sinking sand.  Being on the rock means I cannot be swayed.  The rock is not going to slip and slide.  Being on the rock means that my life can be an example to my children and my grandchildren.  At the end of a life built on the rock, there will be something there to pass on to one’s descendants.  I want to pass on a legacy of obedience to Christ that glorifies Him.  I want my family to see in my life that all the blessings I enjoyed were a direct result of my obedience to His words.  Because of Him I will not be moved!

Sunflowers

Scripture for Today:  Psalms 119:36-37a  “Turn my heart toward your statues and not toward selfish gain.  Turn my eyes away from worthless things…”

Sunflowers are amazing!  Especially when one comes upon a whole field of them!  This field is located in the Loire Valley of France.  And I’ll go ahead and say it, “we are outstanding in our field!”

It is commonly thought that this flower turns its head to follow the sun’s trek across the sky.  In fact the word for “sunflower” in French is “tournesol.”  The idea of turning to the sun is right there contained in the word.  The spiritual truth is obvious.  Like the sunflower, we as believers want to be gazing at the Son, following Him.  David in Psalms 27:4 asked the Lord for just one thing, to be able to gaze upon His beauty.

I am so often distracted from having the same priority as that of David.  There are plenty of things and activities in my life that are important and to me have lots of worth.  But I am basically a selfish and headstrong person.  My head and heart quickly get turned around to be all about me, me, me.  Deep down I agree with Paul in Phil. 2:8 that everything is rubbish compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ.  So why then  do I turn my gaze away from His beauty?  When I do, I cease to grow and thrive.  Like the sunflower, my head becomes bowed down when turned away from the Son.  Not only do I miss His beauty but I become less beautiful myself.

I love this old hymn,  “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.  Look full in His wonderful face.  And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.”  Turn me, Lord, to You.
