Sheltering in Place

Scripture for Today: Psalm 91:1-2 “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.'”

A new phrase has crept into our everyday vocabulary in the wake of this nasty worldwide virus; “shelter in place.”  The idea is to limit exposure and to slow the spread of what for some can be fatal.  This is new territory and the questions and challenges can seem overwhelming.  Cabin fever, FOMO or fear of missing out, and fear of possible financial challenges to come can all create a pervading sense of unease.  That loss of connection is especially unnerving.

Today’s verse is a promise of rest from the anxieties of this unique time.  When we make the Most High our shelter we find rest in His presence.  Rather than trust in four walls, self-isolation, or the government, we can trust in God’s reassuring presence.  This is not just a place to drop in but to dwell.  Sheltering in this place gives the rest and peace so needed in the face of the unknown.  The best four walls around me are His care, His compassion, His comfort, and His control.

The best part of sheltering in His presence is that this can happen anywhere!  For now, my world has become so much smaller, but He has not!  His peace guards my heart and my mind (Phil. 4:7) regardless of where I am.  I never want to leave the shelter of His presence.  Nearer Still Nearer’s lyrics from 1898 say it best.  “Fold me, oh, fold me close to Thy breast. Shelter me safe in that ‘haven of rest.'”

Thank you, Lord, for being my shelter and my rest.

Wearing Green

Scripture for Today: Proverbs 11:28 “Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.”

Today everyone wants to be Irish!  Historically, there are parades and celebrations everywhere this week marking Saint Patrick’s Day.  This patron saint of Ireland is often depicted holding a green shamrock.  It is said that he used it as a visual aid to teach on the Trinity.  But since the holiday has moved away from any religious associations, the green shamrock is now touted to be good luck and the day sees many of us wearing green.

Today’s verse gives us another reflection when thinking of the color green.  Green is the color for growth and health.  Those who thrive with the color green are those who make the Lord the focus of their trust.  It is not the green of money that is the object of our confidence.  We are not green and healthy because we have a healthy bank account balance.  We thrive and grow when we lean and rely on the Lord Himself.

When I look to my own resources, my color turns to a sickly brown.  No other resource in life can sustain me and hold me up as the Lord can out of the riches of His mercy.  Because of the unlimited blessings He gives, I will not fall.  He never disappoints, taking care of all my needs.  He promises that even in old age, I can stay fresh and green when I proclaim to others that the Lord is my upright and righteous Rock! (Psalm 92:14).  I just may wear green today, but with this verse in mind!

Thank you Lord, for keeping me fresh, green and thriving because of Your riches!

Unicorn of the Sea

Scripture for Today: Hebrews 3:13 “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called, ‘Today,’ so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

It is easy to see why the Narwal has been called the “Unicorn of the Sea!”  For the male, the canine tooth becomes a long tusk, piercing its upper lip.  This pale medium-sized whale swims in the Arctic waters and sometimes dies from drowning!  They need wide open spaces to breathe.  But if they do not leave before the waters freeze over in late autumn, then they can suffocate!

Today’s verse says that we can become hardened.  Our hearts have the tendency to turn away from God in rebellion and unbelief (verse 12).  Like the formation of ice, it can be a slow insidious process that we do not even realize is happening.  Sin is deceitful, pulling us gradually and subtly away from the God we love.  Sin is deceitful as it seems so good and right.  It can appear sophisticated and desirable.  We need encouragement everyday in order to resist its attraction.  By recognizing sin’s empty promises and praying for one another, we can hold on firmly to what we have in Christ (verse 14).

I would like to think that I am immune from sin’s attraction.  But even though I have known and loved the Savior for a long time, I am not immune.  I understand the complications and danger sin can bring to a life.  Even so I will always need the example and encouragement from other believers.  He is always ready to forgive, but I do not like the distance I feel from the Lord when I give in.  I know that if I flirt with sin, my heart will no longer be soft and pliable to Him.

Lord, do not let my heart ever become hardened.

Martens in the House!

Scripture for Today: Proverbs 11:6 “The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.”

The cute and furry martens in our area of France were a real problem.  Because we had a car port rather than a garage, they would burrow up into the car carriage for warmth and chew on the wires!  A devise with an electrical shock discouraged them.  But the parties they would have in our attic were quite another challenge!  The only solution was trapping them and letting them go as they were protected.  Thankfully, our landlord took care of them with boiled eggs luring them into cages.

Today’s verse talks about what will trap those who feel no allegiance to the Lord; their evil desires.  What looks innocuous and tasty turns out to be dangerous.  Their evil desires promise comfort and warmth but instead deliver a nasty shock.  Those who are in right standing with God are delivered from even wanting what is evil and wicked.  Their righteous living keeps them away from entrapment.  When the one who is righteous delights in the Lord, his desires change and are no longer evil, aligning with His desires (Psalm 37:4).

It is not always easy for me to determine if my desires are evil and self-serving.  My heart can deceive me and my rational can be flawed.  Sin can be sneaky and alluring and temptation can be very strong.  It is only in submitting my desires to Him that I can have any confidence that my desires are lining up with His.  He will shine the light of His Word and expose the thoughts and attitudes of my heart. (Heb. 4:12)  The discomfort of conviction is a whole lot better than becoming trapped!

Lord, change my desires to be like Yours.

The Thinker

Scripture for Today: Philippians 4:8 “…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”

This iconic and very recognizable sculpture sits proudly at the Rodin Museum in Paris.  The Thinker was originally only 27 inches tall!  In 1881 he was created to sit at the top of an entryway called, Gates of Hell.  Rodin named him The Poet as he  represented Dante.  But this piece was so well received that he grew figuratively and literally to the size we see today!  His deep concentration gives rise to all sorts of ideas as to the subject of his thoughts!

Today’s verse encourages the believer to think about a list of things that are excellent or praiseworthy.  If we are what we think, than the subject of our thoughts makes an incredible difference to how we live!  This list of what we are to think about is sandwiched between two verses on peace (verse 7 & 9).  What occupies our thoughts has a direct bearing on experiencing God’s peace.  And each of these excellent and praiseworthy thoughts can easily describe one Person, Jesus Christ!  His Word tells us to fix our thoughts on Jesus (Heb. 3:1).

How often other thoughts crowd in that are diametrically opposed to this list!  The world pushes at me thinking that is untrue and just ugly.  But I can be proactive and intentional about my thoughts!  I can control what I read.  I can control what I watch.  I can control to whom I listen.  And the more my mind remains steadfastly on Him the more I have His peace (Isaiah 26:3).  The lyric from Be Thou My Vision is so true: “Thou my best thought by day or by night.”

Lord, keep my thoughts on You today.
