A Good Egg

Scripture for Today: Lamentations 3:22 “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

Imagine my surprise when on opening an egg carton this verse greeted me; “This is the day which the Lord has made.  Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”  As the day had started differently with my grandson impatient for his breakfast, it was a welcomed reminder.  Suddenly, the unaccustomed chaos around me with his mother in the hospital was not quite so  serious.  Instead of scrambled thoughts with the scrambled eggs, I was able to focus my thoughts on just who had made this day!

Today’s verse is such an encouragement.  God’s compassions are new every morning.  And certainly a new day is a mercy and compassion from Him that we do not deserve.   Each day of life is a gift regardless of the struggle it can be.   Each day of life can be a reason for gladness when we recognize His hand and His mercies throughout the day.  His faithfulness to us, to His word and to His promises is totally undeserved.

My day starts out a whole lot better when I recognize His compassion.  On waking I realize that He has again spared me and granted me life.  One day, my eyes may not fly open with the morning light.  But He has given me this day.  He created it and He has plans for today.  I can be confident that He knows what it holds and His mercy and compassion will carry me through it.  His compassions are new and not warmed up leftovers from yesterday.  How incredible is His faithful love for me!  And how undeserving I am!

Light Treatment

Scripture for Today: Ephesians 5:8-9 “For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists of all goodness, righteousness and truth.)”

It was hard to see our granddaughter having to go through light treatment for her jaundice.  But the light was necessary to break down the excess bilirubin in her blood.  She was surrounded with that light above and below.  That special light in the blue and green spectrum changed the bilirubin molecules so that they could be evacuated from her little three-day old body.  What a difference as the yellow tint to her eyes and skin disappeared!

Today’s verse encourages believers to live as children of light.  Darkness was our past with its evil, unrighteousness and deceit.   But now there is light because of the Lord.  His light breaks down and eliminates everything dark in us.  Believers can now live a life characterized by goodness, righteousness and truth.  His light gives life (John 1:4).  The light He shines on us changes life with its healing and warmth.  With His light we can see what is dark and in humility confess it to Him.  And we can be a light to others, bringing them to the Source.

Although so much darkness surrounds me, the light He sheds will never be overwhelmed by it.  I may feel insignificant but even a small pinpoint of light dispels darkness.  He wants me to let His light shine to those who are unwittingly living in the dark.  The fruit of His light is what will attract others to Him.  Living a life of goodness, righteousness and truth is living the life He modeled.  But it does not happen without the filling of His Spirit, and the gifts of His strength and power!

Lord, make me a light today.

Kentucky Derby Horse Poo

Scripture for Today: Philippians 3:8 “What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.”

The horses that qualify to race in the Kentucky Derby must be the best of the best.  But I never knew this distinction would extend to their feces!  But apparently for some, owning a jar of the stuff is a rare privilege, that is if one is willing to spend 200$ a jar!  The special “nugget” is covered in resin to preserve it on some lucky owner’s mantle.  I guess one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure!

Today’s verse presents a huge contrast between what is valued in life and the superior worth of knowing Christ personally.  Paul had it all.  His background was stellar as a righteous, educated and privileged pharisee.  He was full of religious zeal and entrusted with a mission.  He had the admiration and respect of the world of his day.  But compared to having a relationship with Jesus, he considered it garbage.

Paul found that making his relationship with Christ his goal far outweighed any satisfaction the world could give him.  When I have that same goal, my whole perspective changes.  When I weigh the value of knowing Him against any of my accomplishments or possessions, the choice is clear.  He is eternal and making Him the priority has eternal benefits.  I do not want to be lured away from Him by all that glitters.  I want to let go of what will keep me distracted and far from Him.  He is worth far more than all else.  “You can have all this world.  But give me Jesus.”

Thank you Lord, for the precious value of knowing You.

The Amen

Scripture for Today: II Timothy 4:18 “The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory for ever and ever . Amen.

How unusual!  A teenage couple from Jacksonville, Florida, were swept out to sea as a riptide pulled them 1.5 miles from shore.  No matter which way they swam they kept getting further and further out!  Exhausted, they floated on their backs, fearing the end was near.  They called out to God for help and shortly after were spotted and rescued by a passing boat.  Ironically, the boat was named, “Amen.”

We normally tack on an “amen” at the end of prayers without much thought to its meaning.  But in Scripture the “so be it” is used as a statement of confirmation.  In today’s verse, it follows a burst of praise from Paul.  He glorifies and praises God for His deliverance from evil and His promise to eventually bring him safely into His kingdom.  Paul had been beaten, shipwrecked and persecuted.  Although his life was not free of hardship, Paul remained confident that his future was secure and that nothing could touch his soul.  Evil would never win.

I have the same confidence and my whole life can be an “amen.”  Evil will not win in my life either as He has saved me completely (Heb.7:25).  I have been rescued from the power of evil and no attack can touch my soul.  Nothing can snatch me from His hand (John 10:29) and nothing can separate me from His love (Romans 8:38-39).  He has promised and what He says is true and sure.  No matter how many promises He has made they are all “Yes” in Christ (II Cor. 1:20) so I can continually say, “Amen.”

Bummer Lamb

Scripture for Today: Isaiah 40:11 “He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young.”

This sweet lamb being bottle fed could very well be what is called in agricultural terms a “bummer lamb.”  These are lambs that need special attention and care having been rejected by their mothers.  If the shepherd does not intervene, the lamb would die.  Some shepherds go so far as to bring the lamb into their home and raise him there until strong enough to join the rest of the flock.

Today’s verse is such a beautiful depiction of the Lord.  This tender picture is sandwiched between two verses describing God’s power; His ruling power and His creative power.  How amazing it is that His tenderness can co-exist with that incredible power!  The Lord is our Shepherd and cares about each of His sheep individually.  He carries them when they feel weak, not under His arm or even on His back, but close to His heart.  Our Shepherd leads and guides His sheep but does it oh so gently for the ewes with their young ones.

In a world that can sometimes seem so cold and harsh, it is this quality of His love that I so appreciate.  I especially need His tenderness when I am sore from beating myself up.  I need His tenderness when I feel hurt and rejected.  His gentleness is like a balm for my soul.  Close to my Shepherd’s heart I feel warm and cherished.  His arms hold me up when I just can’t anymore.  There is a time for His rod and staff.  But there is a time for His tenderness.  And He knows exactly what I need.

Thank you Lord, for Your gentle care today.
