Fountain Leak

Scripture for Today: Ephesians 4:30 “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

There are all kinds of leaks; roof leaks, slab leaks or shower leaks. Some leaks escape detection and wreak all kinds of havoc being unnoticed. But a fountain leak such as the one pictured is pretty obvious. Water is wasted, flooding the concrete and lowering the water levels. If not repaired, the levels can get dangerously low with the pump not having enough water to circulate. In this case the problem was with the material used in installation. The workers used the wrong type of seal and the problem was immediately evident!

Today’s verse reassures the believer that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit all the way up to the final day when we will be forever in His presence! This seal does not fail us. There is no better seal than His mighty power to save and to keep us safely in His hand. (John 10:28) However, when we knowingly sin we are grieving the One who loves us with an everlasting love. Just as a parent can be disappointed with the wrong choices of their child, so the Holy Spirit is sad when we make a sinful decision. But unlike the fountain, His seal will always hold firm because of His unconditional commitment to His own.

Rather than presume on this security I enjoy, I want to be obedient out of love and gratitude. I show my love to the Lord not by pushing the limits but by seeking to please Him. This is a love relationship full of expectations on His part. And there is incredible blessing for me when I obey and meet those expectations. Being sealed by Him means I am forever His. I can love and obey Him without fear, looking forward to that future day when grieving Him will be a thing of the past and I can enjoy Him forever!

Thank you Lord, that You have sealed me forever as Yours.

Meerkats

Scripture for Today: Ecclesiastes 7:12 “Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it.”

These meerkats might be more recognizable standing up on their haunches, looking out for predators. Or maybe Timon the meerkat from The Lion King comes to mind. In any case, they are very often seen digging in the dirt. In fact, they could be considered as nature’s little excavators. Even as young pups they seem to instinctively know to dig. Their burrow and elaborate labyrinth of tunnels are their shelters from predators and from inclement weather. Inside they feel safe and protected in their shelter.

Today’s verse describes something as a shelter that we do not normally consider: wisdom. We do look at tax shelters, retirement savings and expensive insurance as a shelter. And of course, money squirreled away is a kind of shelter but according to this verse, it can fall short. In the end, money cannot preserve life. Wisdom however does. And this wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, living a life of obedience to Him. (Prov. 9:10) Life is preserved when not inviting into our days the natural consequences of sin!

When looking around me there seem to be many who live with every kind of monetary advantage. But the true advantage is a life lived connected to the Source of wisdom, Christ the wisdom of God. (I Cor. 1:30) The Lord is my wisdom and it is He that preserves my life. He is my shelter. I run to Him when worry threatens to overwhelm me. I run to this shelter when I see an uncertain future. The Lord invites me to shelter in Him when looking for the peace I so desperately need! Money and a life of ease can never give me this advantage!

Thank you Lord for being my wisdom and shelter.

Elephant Seal’s Nose

Scripture For Today: Proverbs 12:22 “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.”

This seal looks as if he has an oblong balloon attached to his face! He is called an “elephant seal” as his nose can inflate and resemble a trunk. For some northern species, the trunk can extend as much as a foot! When putting on a mating display, the male will inflate his nose with lots of air and then compete with other males in a snorting contest! He may resemble Pinocchio’s nose but for a different reason, vying but not lying to attract the female.

Today’s verse lets us know what the Lord thinks of lying. Not surprisingly, the Holy One who is Himself, Truth, detests lies. The motive behind the lie does not seem to figure in to His view. The word “detests” is also translated “extremely disgusted.” In fact, lying is mentioned twice in that list of seven sins detestable to the Lord! (Prov. 6:16-19) Just as intense as His disgust is His delight in those who make the hard choice to speak and deal honestly. The Lord delights in those who fear Him (Ps.147:11) and we show that fear by our obedience.

I am embarrassed to admit that I do not always have the high standards of trustworthiness that God requires. It is too easy for me to rate lies and treat less seriously those “little white lies” or those half truths. How easy it is to shade the truth just a little bit. I can rationalize leaving out an important detail and in so doing deceive the one listening. I can intentionally give someone a totally false idea but not class it as an outright lie! I may not get caught in the lie. But I do feel a distance from the One who is Truth.

Lord, may I feel Your delight by being trustworthy today.

The Carabiner

Scripture for Today: Psalm 37:23-24 “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”

The carabiner may look like a relatively small piece of rock climbing equipment. But in fact, its role is essential as safety absolutely depends on it! This strong metal snap-link made of aluminum or steel is used to connect all the different parts of the climbing safety system together. It attaches the climber to the rope, the rope to a harness, and the climber to an anchor. That connection allows the climber to firmly plant his feet with confidence!

There is another safety system in today’s verse. And to walk with confidence, we need a sure connection! This psalm talks about the Lord upholding the righteous (verse 17) in contrast to the many troubles the wicked will suffer. God does not forsake His faithful ones (verse 28). And for those who have His law in their hearts, their feet do not slip (verse 31). When we delight in knowing and following God’s way, then we can be sure that our connection to Him is sure and He will hold us up!

There is always the possibility of stumbling. I love Him and His law but that does not mean I follow it perfectly. Especially when the way is rocky, uphill and difficult, I can easily compromise. Some part of me thinks that loving Him means the way should be smooth and easy. But if it were, would I need to trust Him? Does my obedience mean anything if it is never tested? Stumbling is part of every believer’s walk of faith but thankfully, so is His grace and forgiveness which keeps me from hitting the ground!

Fainting Goats

Scripture for Today: Psalm 20:7-8 “They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.”

There is nothing wrong with this goat but he is only doing what comes naturally to his breed, called Myotonic Goats. They are also called Tennessee Fainting Goats, Stiff-Legged Goats, or Wooden-Legged Goats. When startled, frightened or excited that adrenaline rush causes their muscles to lock up and they keel over! When this happens they don’t lose consciousness. It only last 10-15 seconds and they get back up as if nothing had happened!

Today’s verse and context make a clear contrast between those who trust in themselves and those who trust in the God of the Bible. The ones who are brought to their knees and fall are those who trust in their horses and chariots, or in other words, in their own resources. But those whose trust is in the Lord will rise up and stand firm. In our spiritual battle there is always the chance of a surprise attack. With God’s armor provided we are to stand firm with an absolute trust in Him. (Eph. 6:10,13-14)

Becoming immobilized with fear is entirely possible if I were to dwell too long on the “what if’s” of this tenuous earthly life. But my mind does not have to go there. Trusting my Savior, who has already secured my eternal life, means I can trust Him for this one. I can stand firm in my faith despite ALL of the unexpected. Nothing can separate me from His love (Rom. 8:38-39) and nothing can snatch me from His hand! (John 10:29)

Thank you Lord, that You are totally trustworthy.
