Who’s Coming to Town??

Scripture for Today: Luke 2:10-11 …“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

Amid all the cutsie decorations, the glitz and the glamor of the boutique stood this unassuming sign. It made me smile. Of course, as a believer, Jesus is already here, living by His Spirit in the lives of His own. And it is His advent as a baby that we celebrate at Christmas. But it was the allusion to the song, “Santa Claus is Coming To Town” that made me smile. As fun as some of the secular Christmas songs are, they can distract us from the deeper and more significant truths of Christmas!

Today’s verse comes from the angel’s message to the shepherds. It was a message that brought astonished joy to those men, who along with countless others had waited for the coming of the Messiah. The coming of Jesus was not only to the town of Bethlehem, the city of David, but it was a coming that would bring hope to all mankind, Jewish and Gentile alike. As Simeon said, His coming brought, “a light of revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel.” (Luke 2:32)

How does the birth of a baby all those centuries ago have anything to do with me? The coming of Jesus, the eternal Son of God, not only changed history but changed my eternal destination at the close of history! He came to die. (Mark 10:45) His death on the cross was to pay the awful penalty of my own sin. And because He lives, I can face tomorrow, the next day and an eternity in His loving presence! What an amazing thought!

Thank you Lord, that You came and that You came for me!

Christmas Nutcracker

Scripture for Today: II Corinthians 4:8 “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed, perplexed but not in despair.”

For years I have enjoyed seeing the nutcracker in Europe, but now I am seeing more and more making their appearance in America for Christmas. They have long been a symbol of good luck in Germany where they originated. The early ones were in the shape of animals, birds and people in the 15th century. By the 1800’s they were fashioned to represent and vilify unpopular leaders of the day. Now, the most popular ones are the soldiers who benignly stand guard.  Their function as nutcrackers is almost forgotten!  But their purpose is to press that hard nut until it is crushed.

There is hard pressing in today’s verse but not crushing. Paul goes on to say that there is persecution but not abandonment. He is struck down but never destroyed. Paul experienced tremendous pressure but his spirit was not crushed. He did not crack. He did not lose heart as he was convinced that the One who raised Jesus from the dead would also raise him (verse 14). Despair does not have a chance as Paul is filled with hope, fixing his eyes on the unseen and eternal (verse 18).

Sadness does seem to press down on me and can feel overwhelming in the face of loss, especially at Christmas time when the absence of loved ones is so keenly felt. It can be perplexing as I struggle with the questions of “why.” But for me as a believer there is hope instead of despair. There is God’s comfort and presence instead of abandonment. He is especially close to those who are brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). He has come. He is here. And He will never leave or forsake me.

Thank you Lord, that Your birth is also the birth of hope!

White Elephant Gifts

Scripture or Today: Luke 11:11-12 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?”

White elephant gifts are usually not anything anyone wants, but they do make us laugh! The phrase is thought to refer to what the king of Siam would do to those courtiers who had angered him. He would give them rare albino elephants with the expectation that they would be ruined by the animal’s upkeep costs! The gift, originally thought to be something positive ended up being very negative! All wrapped up with a big bow, our white elephant gifts are received with low expectations!

Today’s verse comes from a passage that assumes that we know how to give good and appropriate gifts to our children. In the same way, our Heavenly Father gives exactly the right gift to His children (verse 13). He knows what is good for us and what is not. He knows what will perhaps later complicate our lives! What He gives is always good and perfect (James 1:17). And His most indescribable gift is the gift of Himself! (II Cor. 9:15)

The gift of His Spirit (verse 13) is pretty much the best answer to any prayer request! When I am confused, He gives wisdom. When I am needing direction, He guides. When I am devastated, He comforts. When I am weak He gives strength. When I am worked up He calms me down. And when I am feeling alone, it is His Spirit that reminds me of His presence and love. Those whose hope is in the Lord will not be disappointed! (Is. 49:23)

Thank you Lord, for the gift of Yourself.

Restless Racehorse

Scripture for Today: Proverbs 21:31 “The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord.”

Did someone “get your goat?” This phrase, meaning to annoy or infuriate, is thought to be derived from the French phrase, “take the goat.” It may have been used when stealing the mascot from a military unit. In more recent times, in the world of horse racing, a goat would share the stall of a racehorse the night before a race in order to keep the horse calm. If someone was intent on sabotaging the race, he would sneak into that stall and get the goat.

Today’s verse talks about getting a horse ready, not for racing but for battle. Were goats used then in the same way to keep the horse calm? Certainly, there were all kinds of preparations for that horse to be ready. After all, the success or failure of a battle can easily hinge on the behavior of the horse. We as believers are also to be prepared for spiritual battle by putting on the full armor of God. (Eph. 6:10-17) And we can be just as anxious or skittish as that horse.

Thankfully, the Lord does not lead me into spiritual battles without equipping me or without reassuring my heart. I can be strong and courageous, not afraid and not discouraged because our powerful God is with me (Josh. 1:9). This promise is my “goat” and nobody and nothing can take it away. The Lord is always true to His Word. The victory is His and I am on the Lord’s side!

Thank you Lord, that the battle is Yours!

Saying Thanks!

Scripture for Today: I Thessalonians 5:18 “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

It is said that an attitude of gratitude can go a long way in making one happier and positive, generous and compassionate, as well as healthier with a lower blood pressure and a stronger immune system! And of course, Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to gather family and express our gratitude for each other! Around this Thanksgiving table where my daughter’s in-law-family is seated, being thankful for each other was especially important. The next Thanksgiving saw one member thanking Jesus face to face.

Today’s verse is more than a suggestion.  It is a command to give thanks in any and all circumstances.  Our thanks in this passage are directed to the Lord in prayer (verse 17).  Quite clearly, it is what God wants from His children.  And when we withhold our thanks, we are somehow quenching His Spirit in us (verse 19).  Thanking God for what just happened is a recognition of His control over the situation.  It is a reminder that He has a plan that is good in allowing that circumstance, good or bad.

When I thank Him, I am reaffirming my faith that He knows what He is doing.  Even when I am pleading with Him for action or change, I am told to include thanksgiving in my prayer as an expression of trust (Phil. 4:6).  Just as thanking others can improve a friendship, so thanking the Lord brings me closer to Him.  As I thank Him, I can feel the tension in me dissipate.  He knows and He cares.  Whatever I am facing He has a plan in it and He is using it.  A heart-felt “thank you” completely changes my attitude.

Lord, remind me to be thankful for it all.
