Queen for a Day

Scripture for Today: Psalm 90:4 “A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by or like a watch in the night.”

I risk dating myself by admitting to watching this television program as a child. The contestants would share their difficult circumstances and the audience would vote on who was most deserving to be crowned, “queen for a day.” Much was made of the crown, robe and roses and the lucky lady was given gifts and paid nights out. In contrast, much is made today (and rightly so) of the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II, seventy years on the throne!

Today’s verse gives us another perspective on the passage of time, be it a day or seventy years. The One who created time is not bound by it. He sits above the heavens and in the light of eternity His view is completely different than ours! A thousand years to the God of the universe is just a blink of the eye. And the span of our years, however many there are, is nothing before Him (Ps. 39:5). Our years pass too quickly, and then we “fly away.” (Ps. 90:10)

It all sounds pretty negative until I realize what is ahead! Queen Elizabeth’s faith in Christ means that she is now in a different Kingdom where she herself bows the knee to the King of Kings! And my faith in Christ also means an eternity with my Creator and the Lover of my soul! In the meantime, this same psalm tells me to number my days (verse 12) and so live wisely. My days are to be spent focused on serving my King. And being “heavenly minded” means I can be of the most earthly good!

Lord, may this day be lived for You.

Heat Wave

Scripture for Today: Psalm 32:4 “For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.”

Just as our thoughts turn to the new school year, shorter days, and the reappearance of pumpkin spice, along comes a heat wave! In our part of the world it seems to happen every year about this time, but it always surprises me! The usual precautions are taken, those taken the last few months, as we wait for that last gasp of summer to finish. The heat has a way of demotivating us, putting on hold all those preparations for the fall.

In today’s verse David describes himself as being sapped of strength. It is as if he is experiencing the heat of summer. David is feeling this way, not because of the weather but because he is feeling bad about his sin. The conviction he was experiencing felt like the pressure of a hand on him day and night. But that discomfort lasted only as long as he was silent about it. The minute he came clean with God, he felt the huge relief of forgiveness. God forgave him of his sin and even the guilt he felt about it (vs 5).

I wonder how long it took David to realize why he was feeling as he was. If he were anything like me, it may have been awhile! I sometimes grow so used to my own sin that I become calloused and even unaware. But eventually, that lack of joy and peace with the Lover of my soul becomes obvious. There is never a good enough reason to put off that badly needed confession. Despite the discomfort, the relief felt when I rise from my knees makes confession worth it!

Thank you Lord, that You are faithful to forgive.

EV Charging

Scripture for Today: Psalm 119:27-28 “Cause me to understand the way of Your precepts, that I may meditate on Your wonderful deeds. My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to Your Word.”

The electric vehicle charging station is making its appearance more and more frequently in daily life. This change to an alternate source of power has its share of controversy. But it seems that this change is here to stay in one form or another. And as the situation evolves, there is one truth that everyone can agree on and that is the continuing need for sustainable energy. Regardless of the form it takes, no one wants to read the word, “Empty” on that dashboard!

Today’s verse reminds us that God’s Word can be our “charging station.” It is His Word that strengthens a soul. Understanding how He wants us to live, thinking long and hard about what He has already accomplished and spending time in praising Him gives solace to a soul lethargic with sadness. It is sadness that can so quickly deplete our strength. But He promises that through His Word our souls are strengthened.

My alone time with the Lord is my charging station, renewing my strength and even lifting my spirits. But I do not need to wait until I am dangerously low on power to come to Him! I do not want that needle anywhere near empty before turning to His Word for the encouragement I need. Being “charged up” not only strengthens me but puts me in a state of readiness for whatever challenge is around the corner. It is only in being connected to Christ and His Word that I can be at full strength to face whatever this day may bring!

Lord, fill me with Your strength today.

“Strong Arm” Saguaro

Scripture for Today: Psalm 89:13 “Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.”

This majestic Saguaro not only dwarfs its visitors by its size but can boast of a long life, some of them being as old as 200 years! Recently, the “Strong Arm” Saguaro in Marana, Arizona fell over, all forty feet of it! Its thirty-four arms lay broken and dusty on the floor of the Tortolita Preserve. What an undignified end to what is considered an impressive symbol of the Sonoran Desert!

Today’s verse describes another arm that will never face a similar fate. The arm of God is so powerful that by it He created the heavens and the earth (Jer. 32:17). His outstretched arm has accomplished great and awesome deeds (Deut. 4:34) and by the incredible power of His arm He redeems and saves those who reach out to grasp it (Ex. 6:6). His strong arm scatters His enemies (vs. 10) but strengthens those who belong to Him (verse 21). But not only are His arms powerful, they are tender as well. He gathers us in His arms and carries us close to His heart (Isaiah 40:11).

God’s powerful arms would actually evoke fear if it were not for His love. God’s unlimited power is part of what makes Him God. But I am grateful that because of His great love and grace, those arms operate for me and not against me (Rom. 8:31). The same power demonstrated in His arm is the same power that keeps my soul entrusted to Him! (II Tim 1:12) Nothing is too hard for Him and I can absolutely trust what His powerful arms are doing in my life.

Thank you Lord, that Your powerful arms keep me close to Your heart.

Oh Pooh!

Scripture for Today: Daniel 1:9 “To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.”

“Rabbit’s clever,” said Pooh thoughtfully. “Yes,” said Piglet, “Rabbit’s clever.” “And he has Brain.” “Yes,” said Piglet, “Rabbit has Brain.” There was a long silence. “I suppose,” said Pooh, “that that’s why he never understands anything.”― A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh How astute of Pooh! He surprises me with his funny insights. And it does seem that the more we think, study and learn, the more we realize how little we know and understand.

Today’s verse refers to Daniel and 3 other young men of Israel’s nobility who were taken captive by the King of Babylon. These four were singled out among all the captives to be trained for special service to the King, as they showed aptitude for learning and were well informed (vs. 3-4). These men were committed to keeping their dietary laws and God blessed their faithfulness with something they would desperately need. He gave them knowledge and understanding. Their own efforts at learning would be enhanced by this gift.

There is a whole dimension to knowledge and understanding that is missed when the Source is denied or ignored. It is from the mouth of the Lord that knowledge and wisdom come (Prov. 2:6). And knowing Him is understanding (Prov. 9:10). Although study, research and efforts to learn are very important, they can somehow fall short of that elusive step of understanding. How wonderful that God graciously offers it to those who fear and obey His Word! I will never understand it all this side of Heaven. But whatever I do understand is His gift to me.

Thank you Lord for the understanding You give.
