Juggling

Scripture for Today: Psalm 27:4 “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.”

I had no idea that there is an International Jugglers’ Association and has been since 1947!  They have their own newsletters, meetings, and festivals, all dedicated to promoting juggling.  They have even established a “World Juggling Day” with events around the world.  Being a certified “klutz” I do not think they would allow me to join!

Any busy person feels they already do a juggling act.  The balls up in the air represent jobs, projects, responsibilities, expectations, and deadlines.  A young mother especially feels she is managing more than others with multiple balls in the air.  She may be using not only her hands but her feet and head as well!

Each ball I am juggling has its importance but I find myself always dropping the same ball.  And it is the most important one.  Our verse for today reminds me of what is most important; spending time in God’s presence.  It is not just an obligation but a pleasure!  When I spend time with the Lord, whether individually or with others, I feel as if my day has value.  All the other balls can drop to the ground when I gaze into His loveliness.  Nothing seems quite as important.

His wisdom shows me what balls need to be in the air and which ones I can let drop for a time.  But what I never want to drop is dwelling in Him, gazing on His beauty and seeking His presence!

Keep me seeking You, Lord, above all else.

Spoonful of Sugar

Scripture for Today: Luke 10:41-42a “‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed, or indeed only one….'”

I can still remember my Mother crushing up an aspirin and adding some sugar and water to it.  She would put it all on a spoon and I would dutifully swallow it when sick.  Now, there are plenty of children-friendly pain relievers that do this.  But my Mother’s method was the only way I would swallow what was good for me.  A spoonful of sugar does indeed make the medicine go down, as in the Mary Poppins movie lyric.

In our verse for today, the Lord is reprimanding Martha with gentle correction.  Martha was at her wit’s end doing all the meal preparation and serving without the help of her sister, Mary.  In an outburst of self-pity, she tries to publicly shame Mary and enlist the Lord’s help in getting Mary to help her.

I love the response Jesus gives her.  You can just hear the love in His voice when twice He speaks her name.  This is the only time He repeated a woman’s name and it was done with gentle love.  Martha, in her well-meaning service, had neglected her first priority of listening to her Savior.  It was hard to hear but the Lord was gracious in the way he addressed her.

Jesus’ gentle manner with Martha was the sweet taste in His rebuke.  Like foul-tasting medicine, we need to swallow His correction.  The Lord disciplines those who belong to Him (Heb. 12:4-7).  But the goal is always restoration and growth.  It is never done in anger or exasperation.

Do I hear Him repeating my name in love?  Lord, keep me listening to Your gentle correction.  Keep my heart close to Yours.

Waking Up

Scripture for Today: Psalm 3:5 “I lie down and sleep. I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.”

We miss our Tiger.  But one thing I do not miss is him waking us early in the morning.  The door was always closed but in our old house, he was able to push it open.  He would then jump on the bed and nudge us until we either threw him out or got up.  I can think of worse ways to wake up.  A blaring buzzer on the alarm pulls me out of sleep a little too rudely.  I can still remember my children waking me up with their first cry of the day.  Waking up is just sometimes hard to do.

Our verse for today makes me realize that it is a gift to wake up at all.  It is the Lord’s grace that allows me to lie down and sleep.  I am warm and protected with a roof over my head when so many do not have that privilege.  I awake without fear of danger or war and I awake in good health.  Waking up with joy in my heart is not my strong point.  Yet, I am convinced that it is the Lord who allows me to wake up to one more day.  He sustains my life.  Each breath and each heart beat occurs because He has allowed it.

The Lord of course, never slumbers or sleeps.  He watches me wake up and waits for me to turn my thoughts to Him.  Do I awake with thankfulness in my heart for His gift of life?  Or do my thoughts immediately turn to deadlines and pressures of the day?

If I have not said it yet today, “Good morning, Lord.  Thank you for allowing me another day.”

Crabs

Scripture for Today: Ephesians 5:15 “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise.”

I am not a fan of crabs.  Their pincers make me a bit nervous and their appearance is a bit off-putting.  But one of their behaviors always brings a smile; their ability to walk sideways.  In trying to avoid them, this unusual behavior makes me unsure of which way to go to get out of their way!  Perhaps they are confused too, not knowing whether they are coming or going!  The fact that their joints bend outwards rather than forwards makes for this bizarre gait.  They can shuffle forwards but sideways allows for more speed and efficiency.  They can quickly dip into a hole or crevice and escape a predator.

Our verse for today reminds us to walk with care.  As believers we are to walk with wisdom.  Perhaps walking wisely can look like a sideways gait to some.  Our walk is to be different than those around us who are walking foolishly, outside of God’s will.  The context tells us to wake up and make the most of every opportunity.  This passage goes on to cite the particulars of this different walk: being filled with His Spirit, speaking differently, singing, making music and being thankful.  Walking in this way is walking in a direction that is different and distinctive!

The subtle influence of those walking around us can affect our walk.  Who wants to be seen walking sideways?  It looks like we are going nowhere.  We are not walking towards worldly values or recognition.  Instead, we are walking towards the commendation of the Master, hoping to hear one day, “Well done, My good and faithful servant.”

Lord, keep me from blindly following the walk of those around me.  Make me wise, walking Your way today.

Fête de la Musique

21062011262Scripture for Today: Psalm 149:3-4  “Let them praise His name with dancing and make music to Him with timbrel and harp.  For the Lord takes delight in His people; He crowns the humble with victory.”

We just celebrated the Fête de La Musique here in Alsace.  Every June 21st, the streets are filled with free concerts and impromptu dancing, celebrating the first day of summer.  This all-day music festival was launched in 1982 by the French Ministry for Culture.  The idea was to make concerts free and accessible to everyone.  Its purpose was also to encourage the amateurs, especially after a study showed that in 1982 one of every two French children played a musical instrument.  Since its beginning it has spread to over 100 countries in Europe and all over the world.

Our verse for today speaks of another reason to sing and dance.  The Lord takes delight in me!  The context of this verse says that the Lord is my Maker.  He has personally fashioned me and created me to belong to Him!  He is also my King.  My allegiance is to Him and He rules my life.  Having a humble attitude as His subject means that He crowns me with victory.  As wonderful as the arrival of summer is, these reasons to celebrate are far more impressive!

I am overwhelmed with the idea that God could take delight in me.  It just does not seem possible.  I know my own black heart.  But He sees me through the righteousness of His Son, Jesus.  He sees the perfect me.  That is reason enough to burst into jubilant song with music! (Psalm 98:4)  He delights in me and has given me victory!

For the believer, every day can be a Fête de la Musique!  May this day be filled with praise and song to You!
