Sealed

Scripture for Today:  Ephesians 1:13  “In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation – having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,”

The other day I gave my husband a card on the back of which I wrote, “S.W.A.K.”  I was surprised he did not realize that it meant, “sealed with a kiss!”

Recently, seals have seen a resurgence in popularity, but they have been around for a very long time.  In biblical times they were common and served several purposes.  First, they kept that document rolled and closed.  They also kept a communication private.  The seal revealed the sender as it was imprinted with an identifying mark.  Of course, the importance of a seal was only as important as the sender.

Our verse for today says that believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit.  Being sealed by Him means guaranteed security and the reassurance of belonging to Him.  I am His possession.  He cares enough about me to seal me to Himself.

In Song of Solomon 8:6 there is also a seal.  It is a seal that pledges fidelity between the bride and the bridegroom.  This seal was over the heart and on the arm.  It was a sign of love.  I like to think of my seal of the Holy Spirit in the same way.  Because He loves me, He has marked me forever as His own.  And it is through the seal of His Holy Spirit that He speaks love and reassurance to my heart.

He is the Holy Spirit of promise.  He has promised Himself to me.  The imperfect up- and- down relationship I have with Him now is not to be compared to the closeness we will someday enjoy.  His seal has guaranteed it!

Beautiful Hands

Scripture for Today:  John 10:28-29  “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; no one will snatch them from My hand.  My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one can snatch them from My Father’s hand.”

Young hands are beautiful hands.  As we get older, spots and raised veins appear.  Arthritis can swell the knuckles and hands do not look as beautiful as they once did.  Hands have a way of giving away our age.  Too bad gloves are not in style!

The Scriptures tell us that God is Spirit (John 4:24).  Even so, the Bible is full of references to God’s eyes or arms or hands to help us understand Him.  And I love to think of His hands and the fact that as His child, I am held there, safe and secure.

Our verses for today describe His hands as being more powerful than any others.  There can be no sudden sneaky move on the part of the enemy that can snatch me out of His hand.  I, myself, can not cause Him to let go.  My faith in Him put me there.  His power and love keep me there.

His are the hands that formed the universe.  The hand that holds me is the same hand that stilled the waters and calmed the seas.  Those hands touch and heal.  And His hands are scarred with the proof of His love.  They are hands that I can trust.  He will not let me go.

My life is in His hands, but more than that my eternity is in His hands!  If life is suddenly cut short, that does not change the pressure of His hand as He walks me into His very presence.  His hands are beautiful.

Standing on the Heights

Scripture for Today:  Psalm 18:32-33  “It is God who girds me with strength and makes my way perfect.  He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and sets me upon high places.”

My husband and I ran across these two while hiking in the Swiss Alps.  I think they were as surprised to see us as we were to see them!  We cheated.  We had taken the funicular up the mountainside.  We were not out of breath and our shoes were not even dirty.  These beautiful mountain goats did not need to cheat.  Their feet were created for the rough terrain and slippery slopes.  When they ran from us it was beautiful to see how sure-footed they were.  They were never in danger of falling down from these great heights.

The verse for today uses this image to describe what God does for us.  His strength makes us sure footed, just like these two.  We are not ever in danger of falling because His way is perfect.  He sets us on high places.  For me these high places are all the exploits and adventures  with which He wants to spoil us.  When God is leading and we are careful to follow, than life is never boring!  He did not just give us life, but life that is abundant!  That does not mean that the path is easy and rock-free.  There are some places where the path is narrow and dizzying.

The Lord has my back.  He is not going to let me fall.  He has made me to climb those heights of trust and obedience.  The views enjoyed on these heights are views of His faithfulness over the years.  My prayer today echos that of an old hymn, “Lord, plant my feet on higher ground!”

Help Wanted

Scripture for Today:  Psalms 121:1-2  “I will lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

The French Alps were in our backyard that first year of language school in 1989.  When we revisited there, I had trouble getting this photo of my husband, Randy, without the clouds covering the peaks.  It reminded me of that first year when there were many days the Alps would be completely covered with clouds.  It was amazing how much those clouds affected my mood.  When I could see the mountain tops, I felt like anything was possible!  Even learning French!  But when the mountains were covered in fog and clouds for days and days, it was easy to believe they were no longer there.

It is easy to feel that the Lord is no longer there.  When we are in the middle of troubles and worries, they do the same thing those clouds do, obscure our view of His presence.  David expressed this in Psalm 69:17 when he felt that in the midst of his troubles, God was hiding His face.  Job had these same thoughts when experiencing his trials.  But regardless of our feelings, the reality of His presence does not change.  He has promised to never leave us or forsake us.

There will always be clouds. But rather than seeing those clouds, I need to see that the mountain is still there.  It has not moved.  Like David, I can look up to the Maker of heaven and earth and find help.  Nothing is too hard for Him.  I am so thankful that in His grace He gives me cloudless moments when the view of His presence is magnificent!
