Promenade Tapestry

Scripture for Today: II Corinthians 4:18 “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

This beautiful tapestry called, “Promenade,” hangs on the wall of the Cluny Museum in Paris.   Pictured here is just a small part of a larger scene and the detail is incredible.  It was made in the fifteenth century and is from a series of six.  It is hard to imagine all the long hours it took to painstakingly place each stitch by hand on the loom.  I am drawn most to those tapestries with dark backgrounds.  The dark blue seems to emphasize the people in the scene, making them more visible.

Our verse for today tells us to “see” what can not be seen.  What is normally seen by our physical eyes is only temporary.  Paul encourages those going through difficult times to look to the unseen, to look towards what is eternal.  The images and beauty of a tapestry are not seen from underneath.  Seen from the under side, nothing makes much sense.  We do not see how the dark colors are adding to the scene.  We do not see what God is doing or how everything will be working out.  But He promises to be working in us the very beautiful image of His Son.

Sometimes the Lord is using beautiful silk thread.  On rare occasions He may even use gold or silver thread.  But sometimes the threads are dark and coarse.  I may never understand why God allows excruciating pain or what looks like senseless tragedy.  But then my view is incomplete.  He is seeing the images emerge on my “tapestry” and it will be beautiful one day!

Thank you Lord, that I can trust Your unseen eternal work in me.

Look familiar?  This is a summer re-post due to ministry schedule.

Polish Flint

polish flint s-l1600Scripture for Today: Isaiah 50:7 “Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced.  Therefore, have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.”

Normally when I think of a stone with origins in Poland, I think of amber.  But the polish flint is another that almost mesmerizes with its swirling patterns.  The markings can even look like abstract landscapes.  This stone can be found in cream, taupe, grey and brown giving it a natural coloring that can go with just about anything when worn as jewelry.  But more common is the grey or black quartz-like hard flint that formerly was used in making weapons, tools or in starting fires.

In today’s verse, Isaiah is using the image of flint to picture his resolution to be faithful to God’s calling.  As a prophet, Isaiah sometimes had a message that was difficult to hear.  The truth he spoke was sometimes unpopular and he was persecuted for it.  He was mocked, spit upon, and beaten.  Yet, Isaiah could reaffirm his commitment to obedience.  He could not be shamed into giving up.  That is because he trusted the Lord to vindicate him (verse 8).  He set his face like flint and was not deterred, counting on the Lord for his help.

What an incredible model!  Isaiah was faithful to the Lord and resolute to continue despite opposition.  I have not been tested like he was.  But I do have the same promises as Isaiah.  The Lord is my help to continue despite rejection.  I will not be put to shame because He has promised His power, His help, and His vengeance on my enemies!  Because I can trust Him, I can set my face like flint as well and be faithful.

Lord, I need Your help to always be faithful.

My Roses

rosesIMG_20160327_161331Scripture for Today: James 1:3-4 “…because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

I am thinking that my roses need some fertilizer.  They bloomed for this spectacular show and then decided to quit.  Probably, the soil needs to be replenished with nutrients.  In my area the soil is especially dry and full of clay and in need of some help.  But we all know how fertilizer is made from animal matter, human excreta or vegetable matter, at least the organic variety.  Rotting vegetables from a compost pile is not too appetizing.  And the bat and bird guano is just a discreet way of saying something else!

The Bible is full of references to plant growth and fruit to picture our spiritual journey.  Today’s verse explains that we become mature in our faith by developing perseverance.  It all sounds wonderful until we realize that the only way we develop that lovely flowering perseverance is through some stinky trials.  The hard times drive us to our knees and cause us to cry out to Him for help.  When we see God work, our faith grows.  The next time we find ourselves in the middle of hard times and heartache, we are more likely to stay strong and healthy.

I wish there was a less painful way to grow and bloom.  But the beauty and color is more vibrant when born of hardship.  It is a comfort to me to know that a horrible circumstance that has nothing to recommend it can be used by Him.  He does not waste that stinky situation.  In His hands it serves to develop something beautiful in me!

Thank you Lord, for using it all to grow my faith!

Murphy’s Law

Scripture for Today: Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

I am not sure who Murphy is but I would like to have a word with him!  The old adage says, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”  There are many versions of how this saying came to be.  But in any case, the identity of Murphy, if ever real, has been lost.  His law was definitely at work on me as my computer crashed the same day as I dropped and broke my cell phone.  It was not a good day.  I hesitated to get into my car!

Today’s verse describes the Christ-like qualities that the Holy Spirit produces in a believer.  There will never be a law against these beautiful characteristics in any culture or in any century.  The previous verses describe behaviors for which all kinds of laws are needed.  But laws will never be needed to control or stifle these admirable qualities.  Even with Murphy’s Law, a Spirit-controlled person will respond to that horrible awful day in a different manner.

I guess I was not so Spirit-controlled as all those negatives happening at once caused me to lose it!  Where did the patience go?  What happened to forbearance and self-control?  Responding with the flesh is so much easier.  But some days I can laugh it off or at least take things in stride.  The toast landing wrong side down is the perfect litmus test of where my heart is with the Lord.  Regardless of what problems arise, I cannot respond like Him without His help.  It is only by His Spirit that I can keep it together!

Lord, keep me filled and controlled by Your Spirit today.

Climbing the Switchbacks

Scripture for Today: II Peter 4:19 “So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.”

I loved hiking in the French Vosges mountains.  Most of the trails we chose were gentle and easy.  But for those rare occasions when we chose a more difficult trail, switchbacks, whether by foot or by car, are my least favorite option.  Certainly it is better to climb switchbacks than trying to go straight up.  But the progress is slower.  It can be very demotivating to cover what looks to be the same ground with the same view as I double back over and over.

Today’s verse is an encouragement to continue on doing good.  Even if our path requires pain and suffering, we are to remain committed to our faithful loving Creator.  Suffering according to God’s will is suffering the Lord allows for a particular purpose.  It makes the climb slower and more difficult but the view from the top can be magnificent!

My lessons in suffering can feel like switchbacks, going over and over ground I thought I already covered!  My progression almost feels like one step forward and two steps back.  But in fact, God is using those hard times to slowly transform me.  He is faithful to use that pain for good.  I am confident that I am progressing to higher ground where my view of Him becomes clearer and more unobstructed.  He has promised to continue His good work until the day of Jesus Christ (Phil. 1:6).  In His grace, He uses every difficulty to bring me into a tighter closer relationship with Him.  Whatever suffering He allows, He does not want me to sit down and give up.  In persevering, I will receive what He has promised (Heb. 10:36).

Lord, keep me climbing!
