Blood Test

Scripture for Today: Psalm 139:23 “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”

I wish there were some other way to check one’s cholesterol levels than a blood test.  They are never fun and neither is the fasting beforehand.  The waiting room experience usually increases my anxiety.  The nurse asks me which arm I prefer.  Neither, really.  I make the required fist and try to remember those relaxing techniques.  Surely it was something about breathing.  I know not to look.  Is this really necessary?  Can’t I just promise to lay off the ice cream?  It is over before I know it.  My results signaled no real problem with cholesterol or any other problems and I am thankful.

Our verse for today is also a voluntary testing, but of one’s heart, motivation and thoughts.  The One who does the testing is infinitely more patient, tender and loving than any health professional.  He goes deeper than any needle can reach and reveals what cannot be seen.  He not only reveals potential problems but He is there to deal with them.

Just as blood testing is not a comfortable experience, so this heart examination can be uncomfortable.  Seeing our failings and imperfections can burst our self-satisfied bubble and leave us vulnerable.  It is much easier to go through life without seeing the plank of wood blocking our vision (Matt. 7:3).  When He searches my heart He may find remnants of bitterness and unforgiveness thought to be already resolved.  He sees those anxious thoughts that may indicate my lack of faith.  But when He brings these things to light, He offers full and complete pardon.  The heart no longer feels heavy but light with forgiveness and reassurance!

Search me today Lord, and make my heart healthy with Your loving care.

Honor

10590685_10152541766293283_2864432810476582835_nScripture for Today: Psalm 62:6-7 “Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.  My salvation and my honor depend on God.  He is my mighty rock, my refuge.”

It was a moment of honor.  My Father was a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy during WWII.  Last week we buried him with military honor for his service all those years ago.  It was a moving moment to hear the three gun salute and taps being played.  It was an  especially touching moment to see those soldiers saluting the coffin.

The memorial service the next day was entirely different.  It was also a moment of honor as we remembered the life of a wonderful man.  But there was a difference.  In speaking of my Father, we also honored our Heavenly Father.  He had been my Dad’s rock and refuge since 1939.

Our verse for today says that salvation depends on God.  We cannot save ourselves from our sin.  He is the One who in His grace bends down to extract us from the messiness our sin creates.  But our honor also depends on Him.  In addition to redeeming our lives, He crowns us with love and compassion (Psalm 103:4).  David even talks about how God increases honor for him in Psalm 71:21!

If my life or my Dad’s life is honorable, it is because of the Lord.  Our Creator continually works in those who belong to Him, forming His beautiful character.  The praise and honor ultimately belong to Him!  He makes a life beautiful and worth living.

It really will not be so long before I am with my Dad, worshiping and honoring together the One who gave us honor.  Thank you Lord, that You create honorable lives  May my life honor You today.

Protecting the Head

P1100111Scripture for Today:  Ephesians 6:17 “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”

My husband and I recently visited a chateau in Murol, a small village in the Auvergne region of central France.  Their armory was impressive with many different helmets on display, spanning the centuries.  The ones pictured here are replicas from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.  There was quite a variety of styles and each had a name.  But the one thing they all had in common was their ability to protect the head.

Our verse for today is part of the list of spiritual armor the believer is to wear.  We need the protection it affords when facing the enemy.  With it, we stand firm in the struggle against the powers of the dark world and the spiritual forces of evil.  Without it, we are vulnerable to attack.  We are not strong on our own, but only in the Lord and in His mighty power.

The helmet is a crucial piece of equipment as a blow to the head can be fatal.  Our salvation is by God’s grace.  He has called us out of the darkness and into His light. (I Peter 2:9)  That helmet of salvation identifies us as His soldier fighting on His side, the winning side.  We may be fighting in a battle but Christ has already secured the final victory in this war.  Satan may try to attack our thinking, planting doubts and causing us to question, but our helmet is securely fastened and our salvation is sure.  Being assured of my salvation gives me the courage to stand firm and fight!  My destiny is already decided because of Christ, my Commander-in-Chief!

Thank you Lord, that no matter what the enemy may do, You assure my salvation!

Shut Door

P1070523Scripture for Today: Rev. 3:8 “I know your deeds.  See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.  I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept My Word and have not denied My name.”

I am standing in front of what is called a “holy door.”  It is found in Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.  This is one of four holy doors in the papal basilicas of Rome.  In times past it was opened once every hundred years, then every fifty.  Now, it is cemented shut from the inside and only opened at special times at the discretion of the Pope.  It is opened to grant all who pass through a “plenary indulgence.”  According to the Catholic Church tradition, this means a removal of all temporal punishment due to minor sin.

Our verse for today is spoken by Christ to one of the seven churches; Philidelphia.  He commends them for their good deeds and perseverance.  The door to the Kingdom of Heaven is opened to them.  Nothing and no one can shut this door!  Jesus took on Himself all the punishment for sin.  It is only through Christ’s sacrifice that we have access to the Father.

There is a stern warning to the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees.  With their emphasis on works and their rejection of faith in Christ, they shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces! (Matt. 23:13)  They not only refused to enter themselves but used their influence to keep others from entering.

I am grateful the door of faith in Christ and entrance to Heaven stands open today.  There is still opportunity to enter.  But one day, He will shut that door.  Thank you Lord, for Your patience and grace today to keep that door open.

Good Deal

2014-05-30 16.23.27Scripture for Today: Ephesians 2:8 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

I was recently in the city of Avallon, France with my French Gospel choir.  We had just enough time to do some shopping before the rehearsal and concert.  I normally take a lot of time when shopping to compare prices and make decisions.  But this time, I knew a good deal when I saw it!  The saleslady in a small shop said this hat was not for sale as it was part of the decoration.  But with a little cajoling, she agreed to sell it but was not sure what price to ask.  She ended up practically giving it to me for a ridiculously low price!  I am not sure the owner will be too happy with her.

Our verse for today talks about salvation being a free gift of God.  There is no better deal than that!  It is because of God’s unmerited favor that He offers us eternal life.  We cannot claim it as coming from our own good works or efforts.  It is entirely a free gift.

There is something about “free” that suggests a lesser value.  When something is free we are less likely to value it.  If we did not pay a high price than we tend to take less care about it.  But with eternal life, the cost was enormous!  It is just that Someone else paid that price.  The price was death, a death that I should have paid for my own sin.  Instead, Jesus paid the price for me.

Yes, His gift is free, but oh what He suffered to pay for it!  Thank you Lord, for Your salvation, so rich and full and free.
