Backwards

Scripture for Today:  Mark 9:35  “After He sat down, He called the twelve and said to them, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.'”

The Rhine River runs through all of Alsace.  It originates in Switzerland with the melting snow of the Alps.  And it terminates in the North Sea of the Netherlands.  All along its banks can be found fairy tale castles and vineyards.  What is particular about this river is its northern flow.  We live in southern Alsace.  But it is called, “Haut Rhin” or Upper Alsace.  The Northern part of Alsace is called, “Bas Rhin” or Lower Alsace.  All of this confusion is due to the direction of the river’s flow.  I always have to think twice as it all just seems backwards to me!

Our verse for today can seem a bit backwards as well!  Jesus is speaking to the disciples who had just been arguing among themselves as to which of them was the greatest.  He tells them that true greatness comes from service to others.  This is completely opposed to what one would normally think.

When I think of people considered “great” I usually think of those who have enormous influence and who are visible.  Normally, a position of power and fame along with wealth is all that would be required to achieve greatness.  Jesus turns it all around.  Someone who serves others does not necessarily have any of those advantages.  Yet, in God’s kingdom the one who takes a lowly position of service is the one who is great.

I am not to follow the “flow” of this world’s values.  It may seem backwards, but God’s direction for greatness is the only one that matters.  Change my thinking, Lord.  Make me a willing servant today.

Master Mechanic

Scripture for Today:  Psalm 139:14  “I will give thanks to You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works and my soul knows it very well.”

So many times I have regretted learning nothing about car engines.  When living as a single it was certainly a disadvantage.  There were times I was stuck.  There were times when a mechanic would take advantage of my ignorance.

Even the smallest car problem would confuse me.  I remember when my 1963 VW bug decided to quit…..quit turning off that is!  The key continually turned in circles without turning off the engine!  I thought I would have to wait until the car ran out of gas!  The car was so old that its vibrations had pushed out a screw!

Our verse for today reminds us of how our bodies are so wonderfully made!  I may think a car engine is fearfully and wonderfully made.  But of course it does not compare to the complicated work of art that is our body.

I often wonder, as wonderful as His work is, why I seem to have defects.  With age, there is knocking in this engine!  There are new cracks here and there.   Like a car engine, things begin to break down.  However, He designed me that way for His purposes.  We are told that our bodies are frail vessels of earth so that any power in us can be seen as coming from Him (II Cor. 4:7).

I am fearfully and wonderfully made, yes.  But at the same time I am frail.  Rather than be discouraged about my weaknesses, I can keep positive knowing God uses them to show His power.  I am one of His little ones in this well known song:  “Little ones to Him belong.  They are weak but HE is strong.”

Price Tag

IMG_20130124_111941Scripture for Today:  I Corinthians 6:20  “For you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

Shopping in France is very different than shopping in the States.  In France, there are only two times in the year when a retailer can put on a store-wide sale; January and July.  Those stores who choose another time of year will have to pay a fine to the government.  So sales here are a long-anticipated event.

Retailers will announce the words, “Prix Choc!” which translates, “Price Cut.”  But my mind always goes to the other meaning of “choc” and I am shocked at the price still being so high!    One good thing about shopping here is that the tax is always included in the price listed.  Even so, I always need to translate the euros into dollars to know what I am paying.

Our verse for today talks about a price that God paid for me.  The price He paid for me was enormously high and shocking!  On that cross He shed blood and died for me.  He paid for me the debt that I owed for my own sin.  It cost Him everything.

My body and spirit rightfully belong to Him.  I am not my own.  Because of His sacrifice I am His.  So then, I am to honor Him in all I do.  I do not always do a good job of it.  Thankfully, He does not go to “Returns” because I am defective!  He did not purchase me because I was worth it.  He purchased me to give me worth.  It is amazing that He would think I could be worth loving, worth holding.  But He does.  He created me to be His.

I am forever His and He is forever mine!

Proud as a Peacock

Scripture for Today:  II Corinthians 10:17  “But let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

It seems that the peacock has a right to pride!  His plumage is gorgeous and of course he knows it!  After all, he knows instinctively to strut his stuff in attracting the pea hen!

We once stayed at Casa De Fruta near San Jose, CA. and the peacocks had the run of the grounds.  They were beautiful but the cry they made was like a cat being strangled!  They would have been more attractive to me had they kept their beaks shut.  But then, I am not a pea hen.

Boasting according to Scripture is allowed, but only in a very limited way; only in the Lord.  The only boasting that makes any sense is to boast in the Lord.  HE is the source of anything we have to boast about.  I Cor. 4:7 says, “…What do you have that you did not receive?  And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not.”

It is easy for me to slip into an attitude of boasting.  Anytime I take credit for something, whether in my thoughts or in front of others, then I am boasting in myself.  Paul preferred to boast in his weaknesses so that others would recognize that any and all strength in his life came from the Lord.

God has gifted me with different talents.  I am often in front of groups of people and it is important to do and be the best I can.  Just as the peacock should not hide his feathers, neither does Christ want me to hide my God-given gifts.  But I never want to be guilty of boasting for something He has given.

May ALL glory and praise go to You, Lord!

Wrinkled

Scripture for Today:  Ephesians 5:27  “That He might present the church to Himself in glorious splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such things (that she might be holy and faultless).”

I found another wrinkle this morning.  I guess it is inevitable.  It is not like I do not try to avoid them.  I stay out of the sun and use sun screen.  I do not smoke and avoid too much caffeine (I write as I sip on coffee).  I try as much as possible to get enough rest and avoid too much stress in my life.  But, time marches on.

In France as in the States, there are all kinds of skin products that promise to remove or diminish wrinkles.  Women spend millions every year on such products with high hopes that they will do as they promise.  I remain skeptical.

Our verse today says that one day I will be wrinkle-free!  There will be no age spots either.  It is true that I will have a whole new glorified body for eternity.  But of course, this verse is speaking of the spots and wrinkles as sin.  Because of what Jesus did on the cross, I can look forward to being without sin in heaven.  As part of the church, I will be presented to God without spot or wrinkle.

Christ’s love and sacrifice sets me apart and makes me clean.  Being washed by the water of His Word is a life-long process, but with a promised result of being one day holy and faultless before Him.  What a day that will be!  No more guilt or shame.  No more self-condemnation.

I am tired of my own sin.  Those spots and wrinkles are plenty ugly.  But the future is all glorious splendor.  Thank you, Jesus!
